Research into my magazine genre

As i mentioned, my magazine will be a hybrid of music/fashion magazines. It will be aimed at a female audience and the music genre will be indie/alternative/acoustic. So I have done some research into this type of magazine and also the music genre i want to follow.

This is the uk top 40 chart at the moment. This chart is predominantly pop/dance music, however there are a few artists that I think really follow the theme of the magazine i want to create. For example, Ellie goulding (who is number 6 in the chart at the moment) and then there are other artists such as James Blake, Adele, Katy B, Eliza Doolittle andOlly Murs. this shows that these type of artists are definitely quite popular and in demand at the moment, and there could be quite a wide interest into a new artist of this genre.

FASHION AND MUSIC TOGETHER

Because I am doing a fashion/music magazine, I will need to do research into how fashion and music can fit together and how thye fit into to the indie/alternatuive genre.

This is a page from one of the most popular fashion magazines: Vogue. Marina Diamandis is the lead singer from the band Marina and the Diamonds. This is a band that  greatly inspires the direction of my magazine. The fact that she has a page in Vogue magazine shows that artists of my music genre can be widely seen as fashion icons in nowaday society and there style could be sought after by audiences.  Here are some other artists of the indie/alternative genre that are also involved in fashion and style:

Eliza doolittle is seen here modelling designer clothes on a fashion shoot, and in the article is described as the 'summers pop sensation'.

 This is a page from 'look' magazine', which is commending Florence Welch's style. Showing that artists of  my genre are seen as style icons in modern day culture and lifestyle.

The 'steal her style' shows that her style may  be sought after by other reading the magazine.

I think using artists from a genre like this, will make my magazine extremely current. Especially with the style of the type of artists I want to use. I think the style of the artists' I have chosen are really unique, quirky and stand out, which I think makes an artist more interesting  and recognisable.
Here are some examples of videos by these 3 artists which show there unique style and look, which makes them more interesting and more likely to sell as featured artists in a magazine.

These images show fashion and celebs at the glastonbury festival. One of the artists include Florence from the band Frlorence and the Machine that is also very relevant to my music genre. This shows that my genre of music and fashion more or less go hand in hand with eachother.

FASHION



Because I am doing a fashion/music magazine, I will need to do research into fashion and current trends at the moment that will fit into  the indie/alternative genre.

 These images are both taken from The LOOK magazine website which is predominantly a womens' fashion magazine. This top image shows a popular store showcasing their clothes on models, I think the clothes on these models are very current and fit in well with the fresh indie style. The image below shows a list of the most popular fashion brands. Using this list of popular brands I can now research into current, modern trends that fit in with my genre.

Using this research from LOOK magazine to find out which are the most popular womens' brands and stores, I have now found some images of trends and collections from these popular brands, to give me an idea of what is current and on-trend.

There are a few typical characteristics of dressing the 'indie' way.

Currently at the moment using darker colours, plum, beige, tan, green, cream, deep red, navy blue, mustard yellow

Chunky knitwear/cardigans, usually with a garish or fairisle patterns, look quite vintage

 Stripes

 Corduroy trousers/chinos

 

One of the most popular trends at the moment with indie fashion is the GEEK CHIC look. usually with the geeky glassses and fastened top buttons.

MUSIC

As the music genre in my magazine will be indie/alternative, I decided to search sites such as nme, Q and BBC.

I looked at singles and albums charts for these websites to research into popular artists/bands within my music genre.
